"I sometimes think I was born to live up to my name. How could I be anything else but what I am having been named Madonna? I would either have ended up a nun or this." Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born in Bay City Michigan. She was blessed with a high IQ and a gift for insubordination. She majored in dance and attended the University of Michigan under dance scholarship program. Madonna later risked it all for a career in New York City to study with the Alvin Ailey American dance theater in 1978.
Madonna's big move
In the early 80s she joined a punk pop band called Breakfast Club and even spent some time in France as a showgirl. The wide variety of experiences at this point in her career opened Madonna up to see past her love of dance to expose her various talents as drummer, singer and all around performing skills. Her debut album released in 1982 to very little fanfare until the single "Everybody" became a hit on the dance charts.
Another side of Ms. Ciccone became apparent at this point in their career that off entrepreneur and business woman. Madonna convinced sire records producer's to create a full-length album called Madonna using her previous hit single as a bargaining chip. She proved to be a talented performance artist as well by creating her outrageous persona to attract media attention.
The hit singles
By the end of 1983 everyone knew Madonna. Climbing the charts at this point was not an easy proposition for the young woman. She and her band worked hard to promote and develop the music and the look. Hit singles such as "Lucky Star" and "Holiday" took root in the consciousness of young Americans and by 1984 she was willing to tell her fans that her main ambition. For four decades Madonna has been a powerful force in media. She has changed the face of music, influenced movies, books, fashion and television.
Many would say both grudgingly and with respect that Madonna has made a career of manipulating the media and the public through music videos movies and of course sex appeal. The wily business woman took charge of her career and her image from the start. She is known to be the top selling female recording artist of all time according to the guineas world records and one of the 25 most powerful women of the past century according to Time magazine.
